Jeffery Rezin, President of Rezin Inc.
Often late at night, a spill, an
accident, or a momentary lapse in an otherwise routine schedule
can result in an environmental or safety disaster.
Disasters can be gauged from mild to catastrophic.
In either case, they result in a consumption of time and
resources to respond, correct, and clean-up.
Environmental and Safety managers are often called to
coordinate the follow-up to these disasters.
People are unhappy or worse yet, hurt.
Money is spent, time is lost.
What good can come from this?
This was the routine I was used to in my
early days working with heavy industry.
It was not unusual to get calls in the middle of the
night, on weekends, and even in some cases, when I was actually
scheduled to be at a site just by chance.
Responding effectively in an emergency is a good trait
for an environmental/safety manager to possess.
Better yet however, is to figure out ways to keep these
occurrences from happening in the first place.
I was tired of
responding to incidents as a part of my regular routine.
It became abundantly clear that if something didn’t
change, this would be my career path…incident occurs, I
respond…over and over again.
Investigations into the cause of the incident were
helpful, but a dramatic shift in philosophy was needed in
order to change this paradigm.
At Rezin Inc., our attempt is to find
the causes of the incidents and eliminate them.
We can, and do, respond to emergencies and effectively
remediate whatever problem has occurred.
But we don’t stop there.
Whenever possible, we examine the causes of the situation
and offer solutions to prevent reoccurrences.
Business thrives on productivity.
We understand that even effective environmental and
safety management of incidents is secondary to keeping the
problem from occurring in the first place.
Good management practices, including
environmental management systems and profound safety training
initiatives is the cost effective solution.
Responsible companies need to look at the frequency of
incidents and initiate procedures to eliminate them!
Rezin Inc. has implemented strategies that have
accomplishments that have resulted in award winning programs.
